PAPARLIWI AMINTIYA AWIRANKUWI NGINI JILAMARA NGIRRAMINI

Jilamara Arts

12 JUNE - 27 JUNE

Emerging artists carrying on designs and stories from our ancestors.

The term Jilamara describes "design" based on ceremonial ochre markings on the body. Reimagining these styles at the art centre has fostered a dynamic creative field for maintaining Tiwi knowledge, as well as sharing and celebrating contemporary living culture.
Japarra (moon) and Japalinga (stars) feature heavily in ceremonial representations on the Tiwi Islands. Japarra is a major signifier of season and the coming of the Kulama ceremony, the coming-of-age ceremony that is held at the end of the wet season when a ring appears around the moon. Japalinga are usually represented by ochre dots and commonly appear in various forms of jilamara – body paint designs that the Tiwi apply to each other for ceremony and yoyi (dance).
