Adrian was born in Papunya in 1962 and went to school there, where he remembers Geoff Bardon as a teacher and working alongside early Western Desert painters. His father, Jampitjinpa, was from country stretching from west of Walungurru through Karku at Nyirrpi to Warlukurlangu at Yuendumu, and worked in Papunya as a gardener and builder. He was the brother of the late Darby Ross Jampitjinpa. Adrian’s mother, the late Eunice Napangardi, was also a respected painter, and it is her country—Yalpirakinu—that Adrian now paints. Adrian joined Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in 2002. A landscape painter, he works with a restricted palette and paints the desert mountains, ridges, and trees of Yalpirakinu. His brushwork carries energy, drama, and memory, and his practice is both deliberate and intuitive—reworking, pushing, and pulling the image toward completion. Adrian’s paintings speak to a deep sense of place, shaped by family, history, and country.
